This striking hand-carved sculpture depicts a raven poised above a human skulls, sculpted in richly polished black obsidian. The carving combines the sleek, intelligent form of the raven with the unmistakable symbolism of the skull, creating a compelling meditation on mystery, transformation, mortality, and the threshold between life and death.

Black obsidian is associated with protection, grounding, introspection, and the revealing of hidden aspects of the self.

Across different cultures and mythological traditions, the raven has been associated with intelligence, wisdom, mystery, prophecy, transformation, and the unseen realms. Its presence at the boundary between the familiar and the unknown has made it a particularly powerful symbol of change and hidden knowledge.

The skull traditionally represents mortality, impermanence, remembrance, and the transitory nature of physical existence. At the same time, skull imagery can symbolize transformation and rebirth—the ending of one state making way for another. It is therefore not necessarily a symbol of death alone, but of the continuing cycle of life, death, and renewal.

Together, the raven and skulls combination create a sophisticated symbolic dialogue: the raven represents consciousness, mystery, and transformation, while the skull represents mortality and impermanence. Set in obsidian expressing reflection, and protection—the three elements form a powerful piece centred on the idea of embracing change, confronting the unknown, and finding wisdom in impermanence.
